Computer literacy for the new age
"Computer literacy for the new age" is a project that will be held in Skopje, Macedonia. The participating countries are Spain (Adefis Juventud Internacional), Macedonia (Informak), Estonia (Smart Up), Bulgaria (ICDET Sofia), Portugal (Mobility friends). It will take part 2 participants per country, for a total of 10 people.
In this era of technology, no person can sustain in community if they cannot keep up with everyday innovation. With the idea of fostering new and better working places for adults, as well as making them feel more comfortable in the environment itself, we came up with the idea to prepare a project where adults can gain overall computer literacy and IT skills, with further tendencies to be
more adaptable (acceptable) on the labor market.
Digital competence is defined in the Recommendation as involving the confident and critical use of Information Society Technology (IST) for work, leisure and communication. It is underpinned by basic skills in ICT: the use of computers to retrieve, assess, store, produce, present and exchange information, and to communicate and participate in collaborative networks via the Internet. Digital competence has been confirmed as a relevant priority for the Commission in more recent policies, actions, and communications (European Commission, 2010a, 2010b).
Having in mind that today’s youth has all the devices needed to obtain computer and IT skills from an early age, we are aware that, on the other hand, older generations were not that ‘lucky’ to own the technology we possess today. Thus, our project will be a big step forward into not only theoretically introducing, but also putting into practice the competences required for a (quality and competent) potential employee.
At a European level, digital literacy is nowadays considered as one of the essential skills to allow citizens to effectively exercise full citizenship. Still, a wide percentage of adults still lack the skills and attitudes to use digital technology and therefore to exploit the opportunities that these provide. ICT skills are regarded as crucial as they gradually dominate all aspects of life. This means that theinability to use technologies can result in a marginalisation not only in the labour market, but also inthe civic society as a whole.
In this document it is being proposed that a course, based on a competence framework, is developed through which the senior adult learner can become competent in a number of areas. Through this course, the adult learner will be able to understand technologies and to workindependently with them. The adult learner will be able use digital devices in everyday life situations such as communicating through social media like Facebook, shop online, search for local activities, use government services and tasks related to travelling abroad.
Since most business depend on employees with strong computer skills, employers sometimes find it difficult to find the right candidate due to the lack of computer literacy and IT skills which complicates the process if the one has all the other characteristics. Therefore, our project comes with the idea of preparing a person with a ‘complete’ resume, who can perform their duties efficiently together with what matches their responsibilities regarding using of computer and IT.
Nowadays computer literacy is becoming an increasingly essential skill, and it is of great importance for the improvement of unemployment, since, as we said, employees want their workers to have basic computer skills because their companies become more dependent on computers. What employers seek in potential employees are skills like Microsoft Word for word processing, Microsoft Excel to create spreadsheets, Power point for presentations, etc. So, with this project, we will enable adults to use computer and related technology efficiently covering different levels of usage (from elementary use to more advanced ones). After the implementation of this project, there will be asignificant improvement in their thinking skills and employability.
